WordFest, the annual literature festival presented by Monash Council, is once again set to unite readers and writers through a series of author talks, writing workshops and the annual Monash Short Story Writing Competition.
Writer and doctor Olivia Ong, who will discuss her book Back on My Feet, was thrilled to be taking part this year.
"I've participated in a number of author talks, book launches and speaking events, but I haven't been part of WordFest before," Olivia said. "I always value opportunities to connect with readers in a more personal, community-based setting."
Festival participants, she said, are never short of an interesting question or two.
"The questions I receive are often very heartfelt and thoughtful," Olivia said. "Readers are usually curious about the story behind the book, what inspired me to write it, the challenges I faced and what I have learned through my journey.
"Given that Back on My Feet is both deeply personal and grounded in my medical expertise, people also ask about resilience, recovery and how they can apply some of the lessons to their own lives.
"Many are interested in practical takeaways, such as how to navigate adversity, rebuild after setbacks and cultivate inner strength."
WordFest, and events like it, are crucial fixtures on the literary calendar.
"Community book events are incredibly meaningful because they create a space for genuine human connection," Olivia said. "For authors, it is a chance to bring the book to life beyond the page and to share the deeper intention behind the words while engaging directly with readers.
"For book lovers, these events offer an opportunity to feel seen, inspired and part of a shared experience. Stories have the power to connect us, and events like WordFest foster that sense of community, where ideas, emotions and lived experiences can be exchanged in a very real and impactful way."
This year's festival opens with an in-conversation event featuring journalist Cheng Lei and writer, academic and former political prisoner Kylie Moore-Gilbert.
Author talks will also feature environmentalist Bob Brown, award-winning actor Pia Miranda, Olympic swimming legend Michael Klim, AFL star Travis Boak, and food media favourite Melissa Leong.
The festival concludes with the Sir John Monash Lecture, delivered by acclaimed author, journalist and publisher Eric Beecher.
Participants can also get 'hands-on' with a writing workshop hosted by author Demet Divaroren and the festival's short story competition.
