For those celebrating, Christmas is almost here for 2022. While 'tis the season for merry-making, gift giving and coming together with friends and family – like the second glass of champagne at Christmas lunch, it's important not to let it all go to your head.
With all the good, Christmas in Australia sees a huge amount of needless waste created, and with that in mind we're sharing six easy tips to be more mindful and sustainable this Christmas season.
1. Choose good quality or make your own decorations
Choosing to buy good quality decorations that can be reused year after year, or by being a little bit creative and making your own out of recyclable items or even old Christmas cards or wrapping paper.
2. Give thoughtful gifts
By finding out what your family and friends would like for Christmas, this may help eliminate those unwanted gifts and make it easier when it's time for you to go shopping.
3. Choose recyclable/reusable packaging
Try wrapping your presents in newspaper, preloved bags, boxes or even your children's artwork these items are great for wrapping presents. Reusable ribbon is also another recyclable idea that is a better choice than sticky tape.
4. Buy second hand or give gifts made from recycled materials
Buying second-hand or giving gifts that are made from recycled materials or repurposing preloved gifts is a great way of being resourceful and also helps in reducing waste to landfill.
5. Preventing food waste
Prevent food waste by planning ahead, only opening what you need and using or freezing any leftovers. Why not consider packing a hamper with some of your yummy leftovers for your guests to take home at the end of the day, this will help reduce any food waste.
6. Food scraps can be composted
Remember any food scraps you do have can be placed into your food and garden organics lime green lidded bin (if you have one), or alternatively place the scraps into your home compost bin or worm farm. This will help eliminate food waste going to landfill.
