Reforming Trade Waste Framework To Future-proof Major Employers

Liberal Tasmania

A re-elected Tasmanian Liberal Government will secure the future of 3,000 regional jobs to ensure Tasmanian exports continue to grow, and our regional communities thrive.

Some of Tasmania's biggest employers, including food producers such as Simplot, James Boag, Fonterra, McCain and Mondelez, are facing shifting regulatory pressures and unrealistic timeframes to comply with trade waste requirements from TasWater.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff announced that under a re-elected Liberal Government, trade waste legislative and regulatory frameworks will be reformed.

"Today, we are ensuring that all of these jobs are secure, and our major employers have the confidence and certainty they need for years to come.

"After significant engagement with the industry, it has become clear that shifting regulatory burdens are being placed on businesses by TasWater, forcing major employers to make tough decisions about their future.

"What we are doing is ensuring the regulator appropriately shares the risk and has a system-wide approach to processing trade waste.

"That means TasWater plays its role, and businesses can focus on getting on with the job.

"Without the intervention of the Government, the thousands of jobs these businesses employ are at risk.

"We will investigate options for co-investment in shared infrastructure that supports both industry expansion and improved environmental outcomes with a system-wide view.

"We will also make sure monopoly utility prices support regional growth and are better aligned with national pricing models.

"Of course, the highest of environmental standards will continue to be met but we are making it easier to comply with those standards."

Direct consultation will be conducted with TasWater, major trade waste producers, the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and AiGroup.
