Registrar promoted to Magistrate of Family Court

  • Registrar Rebecca Hall appointed a Magistrate of the Family Court of WA
  • Ms Hall is an experienced practitioner in family and children's law
  • Attorney General John Quigley is pleased to announce the appointment of Rebecca Hall as a Magistrate of the Family Court of Western Australia (FCWA).

Ms Hall was appointed a Registrar of the FCWA in January 2022 following 14 years of family law practice as a solicitor and principal of private law firms. She became an accredited mediator this year.

As an Associate Principal, Ms Hall ran a complex independent children's lawyer and dispute resolution practice. This work included undertaking mediations as well as providing family law advice and being counsel in trials.

As part of her Registrar responsibilities, Ms Hall has managed divorce lists, registrar's duty lists, readiness hearings, conciliation conferences, pre-trial conferences, contravention case assessment conferences and assessments of costs.

She also continued to draw on her expertise in overseeing dispute resolution, mediating in parenting, care of children and protection orders, and supervising and mentoring less experienced practitioners.

Ms Hall starts in her new FCWA position on 21 November 2022.

She replaces the Hon Justice Robin Cohen who filled the Magistrate's role temporarily before becoming a Judge of the FCWA and the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia.

As stated by Attorney General John Quigley:

"Rebecca Hall has demonstrated a high level of family law expertise both as a private lawyer and more recently as a member of staff of the Family Court of WA.

"Ms Hall has conducted many mediations and appeared in both the Family and Children's courts in private practice as well as having a strong working knowledge of the Family Court system from her time as Registrar.

"I am confident her depth of family law experience will serve the Family Court well in regularly presiding over complex matters.

"I congratulate Ms Hall on her appointment to the Family Court."
