The Crisafulli Government is delivering on its election commitment, with repair works now underway at Radical Bay Road on Magnetic Island.
The critical investment is improving road safety and four-wheel-drive access for emergency services vehicles, following an inspection identifying upgrades were required at this road.
Throughout their decade of decline, the former State Labor Government put off important safety upgrades, putting the safety of locals and visitors at risk in priority locations.
Works will be future-proofing the road to keep it safer for longer, including the installation of a larger culvert, repairs to a heavily scoured 100-metre section of the road, and improvements to a floodway to increase resilience during wet weather.
Works are expected to be completed by November 2026, weather and other factors permitting.
Access to the road will be limited during some of the repairs, with community notified and property access unaffected. Activities will be scheduled to minimise disruption and will occur entirely on Radical Bay Road.
Acting Minister for Transport and Main Roads Sam O'Connor said the works would restore access to an important community and visitor destination.
"The Crisafulli Government is delivering for the Townsville region and keeping our promises," Acting Minister O'Connor said.
"We know how important it is to act when safety concerns are identified, and that is exactly what we are doing here and across Queensland."
Member for Townsville, Adam Baillie MP said it was great to see work starting on restoring road access to Radical Bay.
"The restoration of functional road access to Radical Bay will open up parts of Magnetic Island that were otherwise not accessible to a large section of our community, such as the elderly, young families and those with physical limitations," Mr Baillie said.
"A lack of maintenance by the former Labor government meant that emergency vehicle access was no longer possible. Fixing this was a Crisafulli Government election commitment and we're delivering on that commitment."
