ResearchGate and Wiley expand partnership to encompass majority of publishers open access portfolio

New Journal Home offering will increase visibility of hundreds of journals

Berlin (Germany) and Hoboken, NJ - June 27, 2023 - ResearchGate, the professional network for researchers, and Wiley, a knowledge company and global leader in research, publishing and knowledge solutions, have today expanded their partnership to include the majority of open access journals in Wiley's portfolio. Under the agreement, 519 journal titles, including the entire open access portfolios of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and all Hindawi titles, will now benefit from an enhanced presence on ResearchGate through its new Journal Home offering.

With Journal Home, all version-of-record content from these titles, including newly published articles, will be syndicated to ResearchGate. Additionally, dedicated journal profiles are activated and made accessible throughout the ResearchGate platform with each journal prominently represented on all its associated article pages and at all other relevant touch points with members. This enhanced presence will help to grow the readership of these journals - as measured via COUNTER-compliant reporting - as well as increase journal visibility and engagement among the highly relevant researcher audience that is active on ResearchGate.

"Wiley is a global leader in scholarly publishing and represents a driving force in the industry when it comes to making science open and accessible. Since we started working together, our collaboration has resulted in real-world impact for scientists and researchers when it comes to accessing research content and publishing in the right venues. It's our hope that such a collaboration can serve as a blueprint for others in the industry," said Sören Hofmayer, Chief Strategy Officer at ResearchGate.

"It's a pleasure to extend and expand our partnership with ResearchGate as we advance the shared goal of making research more widely available and more useful to the scholarly community," said Todd Toler, Senior Vice President, Research Strategy at Wiley.

Since the partnership began in January 2021, ResearchGate and Wiley have collaborated to create value for both authors and readers by providing ResearchGate's members with article content from a range of Wiley journals. This includes the version-of-record articles and all associated metadata, figures, and references alongside relevant journal information, including acceptance rates, times to publish, journal-level metrics, and details on journal scope and editorial teams.

Over the course of the initial 18-month pilot, which included 141 journals and approximately 20,000 articles - Wiley and ResearchGate achieved the following results:

  • Incremental Increases in Readership: Article content from Wiley journals was accessed 6.7 million times on ResearchGate in 2022. During the same period, Wiley observed no corresponding decrease in readership on Wiley Online Library, as measured by COUNTER-compliant reporting.
  • New Audiences: The audience on ResearchGate displayed greater geographic diversity compared with similar metrics for Wiley Online Library.
  • Extended Life for Older Articles: Articles older than 50 weeks were read at a higher rate on ResearchGate than on Wiley Online Library, thereby extending the lifecycle of many publications.

Based on these successes, going forward Wiley will syndicate article content from a total of 649 journals, with 519 of these journals benefiting from an enhanced presence on ResearchGate through Journal Home.
