Rice University sociologist and religious scholar Craig Considine is available to provide analysis and commentary on the Catholic Church's next leader and the first American pontiff in history, Pope Leo XIV.

Considine said the newly elected pope brings a significant profile to the papacy.

"Favored by Pope Francis and an ally of the late head of the Vatican, the 69-year-old Chicago native was made a cardinal in 2023 by Francis and previously oversaw the largest archdiocese in North America," he said. "His ministry in Peru and possession of Peruvian citizenship will enable him to engage with the Spanish-speaking world, where nearly 40% of the world's Catholics reside.

"As an Augustinian, his values are centered on love, community, intellectual pursuit, education and a commitment to the poor, marginalized, social justice and peace. His initial words, 'Peace be with you,' may indicate his pontifical focus."

Considine said while the new pope is pro-interfaith dialogue, echoing themes of bridge-building, he also holds more conservative views on church doctrine and traditional teachings than Pope Francis.

"This suggests he may be unlikely to embrace same-sex marriage, LGBTQ issues and women's ordination," he said. "His past clash with Pope Francis on allowing divorced and remarried Catholics to receive the Eucharist further points to a papacy that blends Francis' inclusive agenda with a more conservative path, potentially reminiscent of Popes Leo I, known for defending the church, and Leo XIII, who addressed modern philosophical and social issues."

A sought-after public speaker, Considine has addressed audiences at various universities, conferences and community events worldwide. His expert commentary has been featured by national and international news outlets, and he regularly engages with the press. He holds a doctorate in sociology from Trinity College Dublin, a Master of Science in international relations from Royal Holloway, University of London and a Bachelor of Arts in international relations from American University. His latest book, "Beyond Dialogue: Building Bonds Between Christians and Muslims," was published in November 2024 by Polity Press.
