Premier Mark McGowan was joined by Burns Beach MLA Mark Folkard in Kinross today to announce a package of safety improvement works on Marmion Avenue, including the installation of new traffic signal pedestrian facilities just north of Edinburgh Avenue and Grand Ocean Entrance in Kinross.
The works will improve access for pedestrians and children accessing Kinross Primary School and Kinross College and include the:
- Installation of a new pedestrian crossing to provide full signalised protection for pedestrians;
- Installation of pedestrian countdown timers; and
- Installation of advanced wigwag warning signs on the southbound approach to improve advanced warning to motorists approaching the crossing.
Pedestrian countdown timers are designed to help improve intersection safety and efficiency by reducing pedestrian confusion, and the chance of pedestrians crossing without enough time.
The project is jointly funded by the State Government and City of Joondalup with completion expected by the end of January 2020.
As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:
"I'm pleased my Government has funded these safety improvements for the residents of Kinross.
"Around 25,000 vehicles pass through this busy intersection each day, of which over six per cent are heavy vehicles, so making sure students and community members can cross safely is a major priority."
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"It's great to see Main Roads and the City of Joondalup working collaboratively to achieve this important safety commitment.
"The works will provide a range of improvements to increase the safety of pedestrians, particularly students of Kinross College who are crossing Marmion Avenue at this location."
As stated by Burns Beach MLA Mark Folkard:
"Installing this new pedestrian crossing will make a major difference for local Kinross residents.
"When I was a local policeman I attended a car v bicycle traffic crash about 500 metres from this location. This crossing will improve the safety for all children in the local area crossing Marmion Avenue.
"This was one of my key election commitments - I'm looking forward to seeing it up and running in time for next year's school year."
