The upgraded Schnapper Point boat ramp is now open, delivering a safer, more accessible and easier to use facility for boaters.

This boat ramp is a high-use facility that had aged and required renewal. The upgrade, fully funded by Better Boating Victoria, includes:

  • new jetties, providing more space to tie up and better access to boats
  • a new and improved boat ramp, increasing launching capacity and ease of use
  • a new concrete manoeuvring area and pedestrian area, making the carpark easier to navigate for all users
  • DDA compliant accessible jetties and a Hansa hoist, supporting access for people of all abilities.

Mayor Stephen Batty said the Shire is proud to have delivered these works for our community, thanks to funding from Better Boating Victoria. "The new Hansa hoist and accessible jetties at Schnapper Point open up boating and fishing to people who may have missed out in the past. This means people of all abilities can enjoy our stunning coastline," Cr Batty said.

Tanti Ward Councillor Paul Pingiaro said it was fantastic to see the new ramp open. "This is an important piece of infrastructure for our local boating community and the many visitors who enjoy getting out on Port Phillip Bay. A big thank you to our Council officers, contractors and everyone involved in delivering the project on time and ready for the boating and snapper season," Cr Pingiaro said.

The next stage of improvements to the precinct will see the boardwalk get a real makeover, with construction commencing later this month. The boardwalk's ageing timber will be replaced with a fibre reinforced polymer material that will improve safety, durability and accessibility.

The material has been chosen for its durability and low maintenance. Fibre reinforced polymer is an excellent choice for harsh coastal environments, highly resistant to rot, rust, salt and corrosion. Locals and visitors alike will enjoy the anti-slip surface and wider pathways to accommodate prams and wheelchairs.

Boardwalk works are expected to be completed by Christmas. Temporary closures will be in place during construction.
