The CDC estimates that roughly 1 in 6 Americans gets sick from foodborne diseases every year. While some of these illnesses are treatable with antibiotics, Shiga toxin producing E. coli is not. UConn Health immunology researcher, Sivapriya Kailasan Vanaja, is focusing on the interaction between our immune system and E. coli to better understand it and develop new treatments against this potentially deadly disease.
