Sewage Plant Gets Million-dollar Upgrade

Pimpama STP upgrade

A $132 million wastewater project to meet the demands of the growing northern Gold Coast is underway, doubling the capacity of the current plant.

Acting Mayor Mark Hammel described the Pimpama Sewage Treatment Plant upgrade as a future proofing project that will set the Gold Coast in good stead for years to come.

"It is vital we invest in key infrastructure as the city continues to grow so rapidly," Cr Hammel said.

Site teams have completed significant civil earthworks as part of the first stage, including moving 65,000 cubic metres of dirt in preparation for construction.

"We care about preserving our natural landscape and that is why we are repurposing land for this project, meaning no established trees will be removed," Acting Mayor Mark Hammel said.

This week marks National Water Week, which celebrates water innovation and encourages conservation.

"Our four treatment plants treat millions of litres of sewage every day, helping protect the region from pollutants and diseases," Cr Hammel said.

"Up to 20% of treated water is recycled and used for things like irrigation of golf courses, public parks and plant nurseries.

"This benefits the environment and helps to reduce the demand on drinking water supply.

"With the city's population expected to reach 1 million by 2040, we must improve our wastewater infrastructure now.

"That's why we're also investing over $150 million to upgrade the Elanora and Merrimac Sewage Treatment Plants."
