Six accomplished space explorers will visit students at the University of Houston on Wednesday, Oct. 16 to educate and inspire the next generation of astronauts, scientists and engineers.
The Association of Space Explorers 32nd annual Planetary Congress is being held in Houston, and its "Community Day" connects students across Texas with astronauts, cosmonauts and taikonauts to learn about the future of space exploration while honoring past accomplishments.
Delegates scheduled to visit UH include NASA astronauts Clay Anderson and Mary Ellen Weber; Russian Space Agency cosmonauts Alexander Alexandrov and Sergei Krikalev; Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Chiaki Mukai; and Claude Nicollier, retired European Space Agency astronaut.
They will speak to students and faculty at the Cullen College of Engineering, Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture (SICSA), College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, College of Technology, College of Education and UH Charter School. The ASE flyers will also participate in a panel discussion at 1 p.m. in Student Center South.
"The goal of this day is to reach 50,000 students across the state of Texas with UH at the forefront," said Heather Domjan, interim executive director of the UH STEM Center, who is co-hosting the UH event with Olga Bannova, SICSA director and research professor at Cullen College of Engineering. "It's a once in a lifetime experience for these students."
