Speeder caught traveling in excess of 200km/hr

Around 1am this morning, Bridgewater Police detected a white BMW M2 travelling at 222km/hr on the Bowen Bridge at Risdon, which is a posted 80km/hr zone.

The driver, a 27 year old man from Hobart was arrested at the scene and was charged with operating a motor vehicle in an unnecessary execution of speed, and for exceeding the speed limit by 142km/hr.

The man will appear at the Hobart Magistrates Court at a later date.

The vehicle was confiscated and was towed from the scene.

"This incident is of great concern for Tasmania Police. The result of this vehicle crashing at this speed would have fatal consequences and the driver put his life, the life of his passenger and other road users at extreme risk," said Sergeant Robert Bessell.

"Tasmania Police urge all motorists to consider their actions and travel within the posted speed limits to keep all road users safe. Road Safety is everyone's responsibility."
