The McGowan Government is investing $8.7 million towards works on the historic One Mile Jetty in Carnarvon, as part of the 2021-22 State Budget.
The funding almost doubles the McGowan Government's election commitment for restoration works following the damage done to the jetty as a result of Cyclone Seroja.
A structural assessment carried out following the cyclone recommended part of the jetty be demolished, with debris presenting a major risk to maritime traffic.
Work has been underway to remove debris from the surrounding water and a maritime exclusion zone put in place around the jetty as a safety measure.
Major deconstruction works on the extensively damaged sections of the jetty are expected to start next month, with timber to be retained for use in the restoration.
The McGowan Government, in partnership with the Carnarvon Heritage Group and the Shire of Carnarvon, is continuing public consultation on the jetty restoration, with two community forums held over the past two months and a third due in September.
The Gascoyne Development Commission is recruiting a project manager for the restoration works.
The State is continuing to advocate for a Federal Government funding contribution to the project to support an expanded scope of restoration works.
As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
"Our Government remains absolutely committed to ensuring One Mile Jetty continues to be an asset for the Carnarvon community for decades to come.
"This increased funding allocation means we can get on with managing the maritime safety issues caused by Cyclone Seroja while we finalise plans for the jetty restoration.
"We will continue to work to get the Commonwealth on board so the restoration will deliver an optimum reconstruction."
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"I visited Carnarvon only a few weeks ago and saw firsthand the damage Cyclone Seroja caused to One Mile Jetty.
"Major demolition works will start in October and we will seek to retain the timber for the local heritage group, with consultation on the reconstruction still ongoing.
"This, combined with our work to open up the Carnarvon Fascine, will provide new opportunities for the local community."
