Statement By Commissioner Zaharieva On AI In Science Strategy

European Commission

Europe draws its competitiveness from knowledge. From the world's first universities to today's leading research institutions, our continent has advanced by questioning, discovering, and innovating.

Artificial intelligence is now transforming this longstanding excellence. It is not only accelerating science but also changing science itself. AI can test ideas in seconds, process data on scale, and reveal patterns that open entirely new fields of discovery. The question is not whether AI will shape the future of science, but whether Europe will lead or follow.

We choose to lead. And we are matching our ambition with resources.

That is why we are launching the European Strategy for AI in Science. At its heart is the Resource for AI Science in Europe (RAISE), a virtual institute to connect Europe's brightest minds with the computing power, the data, and the funding they need. With €58 million for new Doctoral and Excellence Networks, we are training and attracting the best talent. With Horizon Europe contributing €600 million to AI Gigafactories, we are securing dedicated computational power for Europe's scientists and startups. And Horizon Europe will aim to double current support to AI science by 2028, as per our current proposal.

But this is not only about money. It is about building a European way for AI in science: open, collaborative, interdisciplinary, and responsible; where AI serves science, and science serves society.

With this strategy, Europe is making a purposeful choice to empower scientists, nurture talent and safeguard our sovereignty.

My message to every scientist in Europe, and to our partners worldwide, is simple - let's do it! Together, we will push the frontiers of knowledge and crack the most difficult scientific problems with AI; and we will do it in a way that strengthens science and increases prosperity.
