Hume City Council extends its deepest sympathies to everyone affected by the devastating floods and landslides in Nepal.
As the scale of this tragedy continues to unfold, hundreds of lives have been lost and Australians remain unaccounted for. Our thoughts are with those grieving, those anxiously awaiting news of loved ones, and the communities facing a long road to recovery.
The floods have devastated communities, destroyed homes and critical infrastructure, and left thousands of people needing shelter, food, clean water and medical assistance. Search and rescue efforts continue in extremely difficult conditions.
For many people in Hume, this tragedy is not a distant event. Our city has a proud and longstanding connection with Nepal through the many Nepali residents, businesses, community leaders and cultural organisations that enrich our city.
As Mayor, my heart goes out to everyone in our community who has family, friends or loved ones in the affected areas.
On behalf of Council, I want our Nepali community to know that Hume stands beside you. I encourage residents to check in on friends, neighbours, and colleagues who may be affected and offer support wherever they can.
To anyone in our community who has been personally affected, please know that support is available. Council will continue working closely with community leaders, places of worship and local support services to ensure assistance is accessible, culturally safe and compassionate.
Hume is a strong and caring community. In times of tragedy, we come together with compassion and kindness, and I know we will do so again.
