Stroke Foundation Mourns Pope, Stresses Stroke Awareness

Stroke Foundation

Stroke Foundation today expressed its condolences following the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, with stroke, and subsequent heart failure, reported as the cause of death of the 88-year-old pontiff.

Stroke Foundation CEO Dr Lisa Murphy said the passing of such a globally prominent figure highlights the far-reaching impact of stroke.

"On behalf of Stroke Foundation and the stroke community across Australia, we extend our deepest sympathies to the Catholic community and all those mourning His Holiness Pope Francis," Dr Murphy said.

"Pope Francis touched countless lives through his humility, compassion, and dedication to serving others. As we reflect on Pope Francis' life and legacy, we're reminded of the devastating impact stroke continues to have worldwide. In Australia alone, around 46,000 people experience a stroke every year - that's one stroke every 11 minutes, and stroke is the underlying cause of 8,400 deaths.

While stroke remains one of Australia's leading causes of death and disability, advancements in prevention, treatment and rehabilitation care are improving outcomes for many.

"Every stroke is different, and the impact varies from person to person. Pope Francis' passing is a poignant reminder of why we continue to advocate for better stroke prevention, treatment and care across Australia, particularly in regional and remote areas where access to timely stroke treatment and recovery services remains challenging."

Knowing the F.A.S.T. signs of stroke and responding urgently by seeking medical attention can save lives and reduce the impact of stroke.

F.A.S.T. stands for:

• Face: Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?

• Arms: Can they lift both arms?

• Speech: Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?

• Time: Time is critical.

If you see any of these signs, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Stroke Foundation continues to work towards Australia with fewer strokes, better outcomes and support and care for all.

Stroke Foundation is a national charity that partners with the community to prevent stroke, save lives and enhance recovery.
