Suspended driver charged over aggravated burnout, spectators breach COVID rules at Wollongong

A suspended driver has been charged over an alleged aggravated burnout in the Illawarra overnight.

About 10.40pm (Wednesday 30 June 2021), officers attached to Wollongong Traffic and Highway Patrol Command observed a vehicle conduct a burnout at the intersection of Ralph Black Drive and Montague Street, North Wollongong, in front of a group of spectators.

The burnout only ceased after the rear tyres had disintegrated.

The driver – a 22-year-old man – was stopped and spoken to by police. Checks revealed his license was suspended.

The Dapto man has been issued with a Court Attendance Notice for aggravated burnout, and drive whilst suspended, while his vehicle was issued with a major defect notice.

He's due to appear before Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday 3 August 2021.

The driver, his 25-year-old male passenger, and six spectators have all been issued with infringement notices for breaching the current Public Health Order.
