Sydney's Central Station skyline to transform

NSW Government

The new landmark will see a 300-tonne roof expand over Central Station's Northern Concourse.

The 16-metre high and 80-metre long roof will provide natural light to the station. Construction is currently underway and will be completed by the end of 2020.

The new roof will feature:

  • 58 cassette sections, each weighing around five tonnes
  • eight girders, each weighing 30 tonnes
  • installation of perforated panels, 21 diamond-shape skylights, lighting and speakers.

The upgrades to Central Station form part of the Sydney Metro construction work, where the station will have two new underground platforms.

Central Walk, an underground pedestrian concourse, will connect customers to the station's light rail, bus, suburban and inter-city trains and metro services.

Central Walk is expected to open to in 2022 and underground metro stations to start operations by 2024.
