Tasmanian unemployment rate hits record low once again

Michael Ferguson,Treasurer

Tasmania's unemployment rate has again hit its lowest level on record at 3.8 per cent in the month of April 2022, lower than the national unemployment rate of 3.9 per cent and third lowest of all Australian states.

Pleasingly, the new Australian Bureau of Statistics data released today also showed that female unemployment was even lower, at 3.2 per cent - the second lowest result on record.

In addition, in April full-time employment hit its highest level ever, with 171,100 Tasmanians in full-time jobs.

This is 11,100 more full-time jobs than the same time last year, more than half of which were won by women.

It reinforces the ANZ Stateometer also released today which found Tasmania's economy was above trend and accelerating, and found there were "plenty of jobs in Tasmania"

These fantastic results comes on the back of ABS data released yesterday showing Tasmanian wages have grown the fastest of the states over the past year, for the 5th quarter in a row.

In the March 2022 quarter, wages rose by 2.8 per cent over the year, which is welcome news for Tasmania's workers. Importantly, this result is driven by a strong growth in Tasmania's private sector, where wages grew by 2.9 per cent – again the highest growth in the country.

These results are good news for Tasmanian workers, demonstrating the strong performance of our economy and our jobs market, with employment at near-record highs, high job vacancies, and an unemployment rate that is at historic lows.

The Government continues to take action where it can on the cost of living in Tasmania and the wage data shows that our strong economy is delivering wage increases and helping family budgets.

Thanks to the strong actions we have taken to rebuild our economy in 2014, and again following the COVID-19 pandemic, more Tasmanian families can secure jobs, earn good wages and support their families.

This has largely been achieved thanks to a strong partnership between the Federal Coalition and the Tasmanian Liberal Government.

We will continue to support Tasmanians, our businesses, and our community as we deliver on our plan to secure Tasmania's future.
