Rugby Australia and the Queensland Rugby Union are delighted to announce the re-signing of Reds co-captain Tate McDermott through until the end of 2027.

Wallaby number 936, McDermott made his Test debut in 2020 and has gone on to represent Australia a further 21 times, scoring two tries.

A proud Australian, McDermott first represented his country for the Aussie Sevens at age 18, earning 20 caps on the World Series, before returning to Queensland with the Reds where he has flourished into one of the country's premier scrumhalves.

Born in Bundaberg, McDermott grew up on the Sunshine Coast, playing his Junior Rugby for Flinders Rugby Club in Buderim before being educated at Brisbane State High School and graduating from Sunshine Coast Grammar.

McDermott was spotted by Paul Carozza and included in the Emerging Reds program and in his final year of school was selected in the Queensland and Australian Barbarians Schoolboys sides.

The 24-year-old made his Super Rugby debut in 2018 and was instrumental in Queensland's successful Super Rugby AU campaign in 2021.

A leader within his team, McDermott has played 70 matches for his state and was elevated to co-captaincy in 2022.

The four-year deal will keep the livewire scrumhalf in Australian Rugby for the 2025 British and Irish Lions Tour and 2027 Rugby World Cup on Australian soil.

Wallabies and Queensland Reds scrumhalf, Tate McDermott said: "It's a privilege to have the opportunity to live and play Rugby in Queensland. That is a dream I've had since I was a young boy."

"I love representing the Queensland Reds and the Wallabies, and staying here in Australia gives me the chance to continue to do that.

"There is plenty left to achieve in this country. With a Lions Tour and a home World Cup on the horizon, that is a future I want to be part of."

Wallabies head coach, Eddie Jones said: "Tate is a young player who has much to achieve in the game and to have him re-sign long-term shows his commitment to Australian Rugby which is really positive."

"He's a leader at the Queensland Reds and we'll be watching him closely for the remainder of the Super Rugby season."

Queensland Reds General Manager of Professional Rugby Sam Cordingley said: "Tate is a very proud Queenslander. He entered into his contract negotiations stating that he only wants to play for Queensland and the Wallabies.

"He is one of our leaders and we are really proud to have him at the Reds for the next four years."
