Temporary Night Road Closures On William Hovell Drive

A section of William Hovell Drive will be closed for night-time works later this month to allow for the main construction works for the William Hovell Drive Duplication to commence.

William Hovell Drive, from Drake-Brockman Drive to John Gorton Drive, will be closed in both directions between 8pm-6am from Monday 25 May until Saturday 30 May (weather permitting).

The works have been scheduled outside of peak travel times to minimise the impact on commuters.

The following detours will be in place:

  • Travelling south along Kingsford Smith Drive towards the City and Woden, use Belconnen Way or Southern Cross Drive, and then Coulter Drive.
  • Travelling west along William Hovell Drive towards Belconnen West, use Coulter Drive.
  • Travelling east along Drake Brockman Drive towards the City and Woden, head north on Kingsford Smith Drive and turn right onto Southern Cross Drive and Coulter Drive.
  • Travelling west along William Hovell Drive towards Drake Brockman Drive, use Coulter Drive.
  • Travelling north along John Gorton Drive towards Belconnen West, use Coulter Drive.

An alternative route for road users travelling between Belconnen and the City or Woden is to use Ginninderra Drive.

Transport Canberra advises whilst these detours may cause slight delays for bus users, services will continue to operate as normal, and no stops will be missed.

The William Hovell Drive Duplication project will duplicate 4.5 kilometres of William Hovell Drive between John Gorton Drive and Drake-Brockman Drive, creating two lanes in each direction.

A signalised intersection will be installed at Drake-Brockman Drive and Kingsford Smith Drive to improve safety and traffic flow.

These upgrades will reduce congestion, improve travel times, and enhance safety for daily road users.

The ACT Government is delivering the project in partnership with the Australian Government.
