Ten Stories, One Mission: Building Healthy Australia

NHMRC

Australian science is rich in world‑class research and pioneering discoveries that have driven major advances in health care, policy and clinical practice. NHMRC proudly presents the 17th edition of our flagship publication 10 of the Best.

First published in 2005, 10 of the Best showcases the success stories from NHMRC funded investigators whose work is contributing to the health of our nation. It is a tribute to the researchers, teams, partners and collaborators who are working together to improve the health and wellbeing of all Australians.

The 17th edition of 10 of the Best showcases the depth, diversity and impact of research NHMRC funds each year, reflecting the collaborative spirit and rigorous inquiry that define Australia's leading reputation for research excellence and integrity. The stories included in this edition were selected from NHMRC funded projects completed in 2023.

Covering a wide range of research priorities, including Indigenous maternal and child health, cancer, coronary heart disease, hepatitis B and Parkinson's disease, this edition highlights researchers whose work is targeting prevention, treatment, management and cure. Translating this research into better health outcomes, these projects have led to the commercialisation of medications, diagnostic validation and development and implementation of Indigenous health services.

From the laboratory, clinic, hospital and to the community, these projects are united by their dedication, resilience and drive of Australian researchers who share NHMRC's vision of building a healthy Australia.
