- Karrinyup Primary School to receive new double-storey teaching block and hardcourts
Two public schools in Perth's northern suburbs are another step closer to having major upgrades delivered, with the construction tenders for new facilities officially released.
Belridge Secondary College is set to receive a brand-new sports hall and cutting-edge sports science centre as part of the $17.9 million upgrade, thanks to investment from the Cook Labor Government.
Works will include four indoor cricket practice nets, a full-size sports court for netball, basketball, volleyball and badminton, as well as classrooms, a staff study area, fitness centre and changerooms.
The state-of-the-art facilities will enhance the college's successful specialist cricket program, enabling students to train and play cricket all year round, regardless of the weather.
The new facilities have been designed by Hodge Collard Preston Architects.
Following the tender release, it is anticipated the contract will be awarded in December 2026, with construction to commence shortly after. The project is anticipated to be completed in mid-2028.
Karrinyup Primary School's $27.4 million upgrades will include a new double-storey teaching block with 10 classrooms, refurbishment and expansion of the existing administration and kindergarten/pre-primary blocks, and additional parking and toilets.
New hardcourts will also be constructed to replace the existing courts.
The new facilities will increase the schools' permanent student accommodation by an additional 230 students and are being designed by Bateman Architects, with the building contract expected to be awarded in December.
These upgrades, which are 2025 election commitments, form part of the Cook Labor Government's record investment of $6.4 billion in education infrastructure since 2017.
As stated by Education Minister Sabine Winton:
"Every student deserves to learn in high-quality, modern facilities that support them to get the most out of their education.
"This significant investment will deliver purpose-built facilities that give Belridge Secondary College students more opportunities to participate in sport, stay active and develop their skills.
"Importantly, these upgrades will support both the College's specialist cricket program and everyday physical education, giving more student access to contemporary facilities all year round.
"The Cook Labor Government will continue to invest in education infrastructure across Western Australia, so students and staff have the learning and working environments they need now and into the future."
As stated by Hillarys MLA Caitlin Collins:
"This investment in Belridge Secondary College is a huge win for local students, families and our wider community.
"Belridge Secondary College is an important part of our local community, and these upgrades will give students facilities they can be proud of and make the school an even better place to learn, train and participate in sport.
"I'm really excited to see this project moving closer to construction."
As stated by Joondalup MLA Emily Hamilton:
"Belridge Secondary College has long served families in our northern suburbs and is valued by the local community.
"Many families in my electorate have children who attend Belridge, so I know there will be a great deal of enthusiasm for these upgrades and what they will mean for the wider school community.
"I look forward to seeing the new facilities take shape as these upgrades progress.
As stated by Scarborough MLA Stuart Aubrey:
"Karrinyup Primary School is a crucial part of our local community, and these major upgrades will make a real difference for students, staff and families.
"The new classrooms and upgraded facilities will give the school the additional space it needs while providing high-quality learning environments for students.
"I'm proud to be part of a State Government that is prioritising serving the needs of our growing local communities."
