Time for Tasmanian voices to be heard on stadium

Tasmanian Labor

Tasmanian Labor is calling on Jeremy Rockliff to hold a referendum on his $750 million stadium in Hobart.

Tasmanian Labor remains clear in our opposition to the stadium because it is not the right priority for our state.

The proposal was not taken to the last election and Tasmanians are rightly asking why this has suddenly become such a high priority when the Government is failing to get the basics right in so many key areas.

Tasmania is currently in the grip of a health, housing and cost of living crisis. Infrastructure projects promised years ago are not being delivered, and the government is struggling to manage the budget.

It's not just Labor calling for the public to have their say.

Even Robin Gray, the Liberal Party's longest serving Premier, has called for a referendum on the stadium he think is a "dud deal" that will damage the northern economy.

The stadium is also unpopular among the Liberal Party's own MP's, with Cabinet Ministers like Felix Ellis refusing to back the project, and others like Bridget Archer opposing it outright.

It is time Tasmanians had their voice heard, and Jeremy Rockliff and his Government listened to them.
