Townsville Council Warns: Avoid Roads, Beware of Downed Powerlines

The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group (TLDMG) has urged residents to stay put unless necessary after Ex-Tropical Cyclone Kirrily crossed the coast north of Townsville late last night.

Despite the conditions easing, TLDMG Chair Mayor Jenny Hill said it was important for people to stay off the roads if they can.

"Council, Emergency Services and Ergon were still assessing the situation throughout the wider region," Cr Hill said.

"Unless it is absolutely necessary, we are asking everyone to stay off the roads for the time being because there are a number of health and safety risks.

"There's the threat of broken powerlines and fallen trees.

"Now is the time to assess the situation in and around your homes and begin clearing any debris safely.

"It's important to check on your neighbours and make sure you log and photograph any damage of your property for insurance purposes."
