Wollongong residents now have a new app to manage their household waste services, with personalised bin night reminders, a local A–Z sorting guide, Special Waste events and other useful features.
Residents can download the app, provided by LoopedIn Councils, from the Apple App Store or Google Play , select City of Wollongong, and follow the prompts to access information tailored to their address.
Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said the app would make it easier for residents to find clear, locally relevant waste information.
"Waste services and sorting rules differ between local government areas, so it's important that residents have information specific to Wollongong," Cr Brown said.
"The LoopedIn Councils app makes it easier to get the most out of your household waste service, work out which bin to use and stay up to date with local waste information."
Convenient features include:
- a personalised waste collection calendar
- optional bin night reminders
- an easy-to-use A–Z waste and recycling guide
- waste facility locations
- access to make waste requests, including bin repairs
- personalised service alerts and local waste news
"Like many households, we sometimes rely on our neighbours to work out which bin to put out. We've all done it, and sometimes we get it wrong," Cr Brown said.
"Personalised reminders will take the guesswork out of bin night."
LoopedIn Councils replaces the existing Wollongong Waste App, which will no longer receive updated information or collection reminders. Residents who currently use the Wollongong Waste App will need to download LoopedIn Councils to continue receiving the latest local waste information.
More than 3,000 residents actively used the previous app, and Council hopes even more residents will use LoopedIn Councils.
Currently, landfill accounts for 85 per cent of Council's operational greenhouse gas emissions. While Wollongong has seen strong uptake of FOGO since it was introduced in 2020, food and organic waste continues to be placed in red bins, taking up valuable landfill space and producing greenhouse gas emissions.
"We have a really environmentally minded community here in Wollongong, and reducing the amount of waste we send to landfill is one way we can all make a difference ," Cr Brown said.
"The A-Z sorting guide provides quick answers about whether those tricky items should go in your green FOGO, yellow recycling, or red landfill bin.
"By making local information easier to access, we hope more residents will feel confident putting the right things in the right bins."
