Townsville police continue to crack down and track down property offenders

Police across the Townsville District continue to target property crime with officers running simultaneous policing operations Cygnus and Casuarina, which has seen more than 1140 people charged with 3417 offences (*YTD).

Officers from the Townsville Property Crime Unit, Tactical Crime Squad and Rapid Action and Patrols have been running Operation Uniform Cygnus throughout 2022 focusing on prolific property offenders with police arresting 1038 people on 3105 charges, including 260 adults on 1016 charges and 778 juveniles on 2089 charges (*YTD).

Detective Inspector Jason Shepherd, Townsville Crime Services said police were working hard investigating property offences, tracking down offenders and charging them as part of an on-going property crime operation, code-named Uniform Cygnus.

"So far in 2022, police have charged more than 1,000 people with over 3,100 offences as part of Operation Uniform Cygnus and we will continue to target property offenders."

"Our dedicated team involves officers from the Property Crime Unit, Tactical Crime, RAP, the Dog Squad, and Intelligence. They continue to track down our most prolific property offenders."

"We closely monitor crime trends and our Townsville Prevention and Disruption Group established Operation Uniform Casuarina on September 26 after noticing an increase in reported property crime activity, particularly stolen vehicles."

Since the operation commenced, Prevention and Disruption officers have charged 63 adults with 268 offences and 39 juveniles with 44 offences.

Officers have also located and handed over 56 wanted property offenders to the Townsville Property Crime Unit who were then dealt with as part of Operation Uniform Cygnus.

"The operation is focused on targeting known recidivist property crime offenders and further disrupting their use of stolen vehicles through tactical strategies.

"There also remains a heavy focus on prevention, with first time offenders being diverted through cautioning and other restorative justice processes. Prevention requires a whole of community approach, and Townsville District Police recognise the great relationship we have with the Townsville community."
