The Technical University of Munich (TUM) has continued to climb in the Times Higher Education (THE) rankings and is now among the world's leading 25 universities. It had previously entered the top 25 in the QS rankings as well. Within the European Union, TUM is the number 1 in both of these prestigious rankings.
Astrid Eckert / TUM By placing 25th in the „World University Ranking" published by the British magazine Times Higher Education, TUM has established itself among the world's best universities. It has thus risen to the top 25 in the second internationally recognized ranking that evaluates universities as a whole. In the QS World University Rankings, which is also among the small number of such rankings, TUM had already reached the top group in 2025.
In the THE rankings for individual disciplines, TUM ranks in the top 20 in computer science (15th), physical sciences (19th) and engineering (19th).
The THE rankings take various factors into account: on the one hand, academics worldwide are asked about the reputation of universities in research and teaching. On the other hand, data such as the number of publications per researcher, citations per publication, the ratio of teaching staff to students, third-party funding raised from industry, the number of patents and the degree of internationalization are evaluated.
Top positions in other rankings
Numerous other recognized rankings regularly confirm the internationally outstanding quality of TUM in the fields of research, teaching and innovation. It ranks 13th in the Global Employability Ranking , which assesses the qualifications of graduates, and 8th among universities that educate Digital Leaders in Higher Education . In the Interdisciplinary Science Ranking , TUM is number 13. And according to the Financial Times, UnternehmerTUM is the best start-up hub in Europe .
