Two men will face court charged after a car crashed into a weir in the Royal National Park yesterday.
About 1.15am on Wednesday 6 May 2026, emergency services were called to a weir in the Royal National Park, Audley, following reports a vehicle had gone underwater.
Officers attached to Sutherland Shire Police Area Command were told an Audi and a Mercedes were allegedly travelling on Audley Road, near Riverside Road, Audley, before the Audi – carrying two men – left the roadway, entered the water and sank.
The driver – a 20-year-old man – managed to escape the vehicle; however, his passenger – also aged 20 – was unable to get out. Police divers recovered the man's body about 10.20am.
The driver of the Audi and the driver of the Mercedes – an 18-year-old man - were both taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
A crime scene was established and an investigation commenced.
Following inquiries both drivers were arrested and taken to Sutherland Police Station.
The older man was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death-drive manner dangerous and negligent driving (occasioning death)
The younger man was charged with
- drive motor vehicle while licence suspended
- not comply P1/P2 high performance vehicle restriction
- learner P1/P2 licence holder use mobile phone while driving
- not comply P1 licence – no P plates
- possess / attempt to, prescribed restricted substance
Both men were given conditional bail to appear before Sutherland Local Court on Thursday 18 June 2026.
