Two men now charged after suspicious death of Tao Cheng - Strike Force Feyer

A man has been extradited to NSW and charged with murder over the death of a man found in the stairwell of a Sydney hotel earlier this month.

About 3pm on Wednesday 7 December 2022, emergency services were called to a hotel on Kent Street, Sydney, over concerns for a man's welfare.

Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command attended and found the body of a man in the stairwell of the hotel.

He has since been identified as 25-year-old Chinese National, Tao Cheng.

Strike Force Feyer, comprising detectives from Sydney City Police Area Command, with support from the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad, was formed to investigate the circumstances of Mr Cheng's death.

Following inquiries and a public appeal, strike force detectives arrested a 27-year-old man in Campsie on Friday 16 December 2022. He remains before the courts.

Following subsequent inquiries, about 11.15am on Tuesday (20 December 2022), a 25-year-old man was arrested with the assistance of the Queensland Police Service on Stradbroke Island.

He was taken to Brisbane City Watch House, where he was charged by virtue of a NSW arrest warrant for murder.

Strike Force Feyer investigators flew to Queensland on Wednesday 21 December 2022, where they applied for – and were granted – the man's extradition back to New South Wales.

The man was flown to Sydney in the company of NSW detectives and was then taken to Mascot Police Station, where he was charged with murder.

He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court today (Friday 23 December 2022).
