A roadmap driving an energy transition away from fossil fuels and towards more sustainable and equitable societies and economies, within an international context marked by the climate crisis and the threat of a potential energy crisis stemming from the conflict in the Middle East.
This is the aim of the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels , a summit to be hosted in Santa Marta (Colombia) from 24 to 29 April, which aims to enable nations committed to the fight against climate change to conduct the energy transition and halt global warming. The University of Barcelona delegation will include the participation of researchers Martí Orta and Fatima Eisam-Eldeen, from the EXIT Research Group at the Faculty of Biology and the UB Biodiversity Research Institute (IRBio).
Organized by the governments of Colombia and the Netherlands, this international forum will bring together representatives from 53 countries: ministers, climate policymakers, members of civil society and a broad cross-section of the scientific community. A delegation of the Spanish Government led by the Third Vice-President and Minister, Sara Aagesen, will also be in attendance.
For a more sustainable and socially fair future
Unless we collectively reduce the extraction and burning of oil, gas and coal - which account for 90% of anthropogenic CO2 emissions - humanity is heading towards irreversible climate tipping points. The consequences of these political decisions are already being felt in the form of floods, droughts and increasingly frequent extreme weather events. At the same time, our dependence on fossil fuels makes us more vulnerable to armed conflicts such as that triggered by the US government, with the support of the State of Israel, which is jeopardizing citizens' energy security and the economy.
