The UK and Iceland have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on transitional migration to ensure UK and Icelandic nationals will be able to continue to move to each other's countries in all Brexit scenarios.
Under this agreement, UK nationals and their close family members would be able to move to Iceland and apply to stay for at least three years as well as to work, study and access benefits and services if the deal with the EU is not ratified. Icelandic nationals and their close family members would be able to move to the UK to live, work and study as they do now and retain access to benefits and services until 31 December 2020. During this time they will be able to voluntarily apply for three years leave to remain under the European Temporary Leave to Remain Scheme.
The UK and Iceland will continue to work closely together on the operation of the memorandum and will discuss the arrangements which will apply beyond January 2021 in due course.
