UN Free Speech Expert to Visit Germany

GENEVA - The UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression, Irene Khan, will conduct a country visit to Germany from 26 January to 6 February 2026.

The Special Rapporteur will assess a range of issues related to the right to freedom of opinion and expression, including media freedom, freedom of expression online and hate speech, freedom of expression in the context of association and of peaceful assembly, and participation in public life.

During her visit, Khan will meet with various actors, including Government authorities, Parliamentary committees, members of the judiciary, the National Human Rights Institution, journalists and media organisations, human rights defenders and civil society and academia. She will travel to Berlin, Leipzig and Cologne.

The expert will hold a press conference on Friday 6 February at 12:30 pm local time at the UNHCR Germany office in Zimmerstraße 79/80, 10117 Berlin. Access will be strictly limited to journalists.

The Special Rapporteur will present her report to the UN Human Rights Council in June 2026.
