UNESCO Chief Condemns Media Worker Samer Abu Daqqa's Death

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has deplored the death of media worker Samer Abu Daqqa in Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, Palestine on 15 December 2023.

I deplore the death of Samer Abu Daqqa. The protection of journalists and media workers as civilians is a requirement under international law, including UN Security Council Resolution 2222/2015 on the protection of journalists, media professionals and associated personnel in situations of conflict. I call for a full and transparent investigation to determine the circumstances of this tragedy.

Samer Abu Daqqa was a camera operator for Al-Jazeera Arabic. He reportedly died from injuries sustained in a drone strike while covering the aftermath of artillery attacks in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza Strip.
