Uni And Army Ready To Battle It Out

James Cook University will take on the might of Townsville's 3rd Brigade this Friday, October 30 in the annual "Battle of the Icons" Uni vs Army Games.

This celebrated event promises plenty of action as JCU and 3rd Brigade's best and brightest sporting talents compete across rugby, basketball, netball, mixed touch football, mixed netball, soccer and the new additions of volleyball and CrossFit.

Teams competing in volleyball, basketball, netball, soccer, and touch football will vie for a Battle of the Icons Cup, while the traditional JCU Chancellor's Cup and JCU Commander's Cup will be held for the men's and women's rugby games respectively.

All games will be held on the same day, with volleyball, CrossFit, basketball and netball played at Townsville Stadium followed by soccer, mixed touch football, and rugby at Joe Baker Field on JCU's Bebegu Yumba campus.

Both CrossFit and volleyball have been added to the Battle of the Icons for the first time in 2026.

JCU UniLife Head of Sport, Fitness and Recreation Vincent Gardiner said Uni vs Army is one of the University's most anticipated events of the year.

"JCU has some incredible athletes, many of whom showed their talents recently at the UniSport Nationals, and I'm sure our young men and women will do the University proud this year," he said.

"The Battle of the Icons brings together two of the largest organisations in Townsville and the matches are always played with a fierce and competitive spirit."

Townsville's 3rd Brigade regained bragging rights over James Cook University last year, with five wins to three.
