Local Study Hub Builds Brighter Futures Close to Home

Dept of Education, Skills and Employment

Funded under the department's Regional University Study Hubs program, the Study Hub supports First Nations women, Mellissa and Caitlin to balance work, family and study, demonstrating how local access to tertiary education is helping regional Australians build skills, achieve their goals and create new opportunities closer to home.

Mellissa is a mother of 4, a business owner and community workshop facilitator, completing her final trimester of a Diploma of Community Welfare and Wellbeing through the University of New England.

She first attended university straight out of high school, but life had other plans. Her study plans were set aside to put her family first. Now with grown up children, she has returned to study with the aspiration to complete a Bachelor of Social Work, a field she has chosen through lived experience and a deep understanding of the importance of culturally safe, community-based support.

Her daughter Caitlin began her studies on campus in Cairns, but as living costs increased, she made the decision to return home to Innisfail. Caitlin transitioned to studying in her community while working most evenings. She is now in the final stages of a double degree in Arts and Law, majoring in Indigenous Studies at James Cook University. She will be the first person in her family to graduate with a university degree.

Originally intending to pursue a career in law, Caitlin completed internships in large city firms before returning home with a clearer sense of direction and a desire to support a culturally connected regional community.

The Cassowary Coast University Centre has played a key role supporting Mellissa and Caitlin throughout their study journeys.

"For a household balancing work, study and family life, having a consistent, local place to focus has made a big difference," said Caitlin.

"I don't think we'd be able to do our study without the uni centre. Having that access - the quiet rooms, the Wi-Fi, the printing, people who know us - has genuinely helped me and mum so much."

Caitlin has a simple message for anyone considering further study.

"No matter your circumstances, it is possible to study and build the life you want. There is support out there, you just have to take that first step," said Caitlin.

"It's never too late. Mum has taught me that you can do a million things in your life, you don't have to choose just one."

Regional University Study Hubs support students in regional and remote areas with access to study spaces, computers, internet and student support services.
