An Armidale rugby union club is less likely to have its seasons interrupted, thanks to a joint project between Council, the club and financial assistance from the NSW Government.
Contractor JNC Group this month finished construction of a 50-metre-long retaining wall to stop stormwater run-off inundating the Armidale Blues' playing fields.
The fields at Michael B. Moran Oval have been repeatedly flooded by stormwater in previous seasons, leaving their surfaces too wet and muddy to host matches.
"The current drought has meant flooding certainly hasn't been an issue so far in season 2019," Armidale Regional Council Mayor Simon Murray said.
"However, when that desperately needed rain does come, we can be confident the retaining wall will divert water away from the playing fields and enable matches and training to go ahead."
Council helped coordinate the project, which was funded by an $80,614 Stronger Council Communities Fund announced by the Member for Northern Tablelands, Adam Marshall, last year.
Councillor Murray said: "There are a number of clubs that will benefit from what has been another very positive example of Council working with other local organisations."
"A multitude of sports are held at Moran Oval and many other residents use the open space for recreation.
"Moran Oval is a jewel among our region's sporting facilities and hosts significant regional events, so there are also economic benefits to making the playing surfaces more weather-proof."
Armidale Blues spokesperson Mick Fittler said the retaining wall would be a great asset for his club, local cricket, athletics and the many other users, because it would enable them to use the fields at all times of the year.
"It will also bring extra atmosphere at events because it allows spectators to be closer to the field of play," Mr Fittler said.
"It has been a pleasure working with Council and the contractors to make the most of the very welcome NSW Government grant and deliver a high-quality finished product."
