University scientific performance in Catalonia: quality and excellence

From high to low, the board shows the citations for the works that were published over the last ten years by researchers from ACUP member universities. The UB has more than a million citations in ten years of scientific performance.

A report made by the Technical Office of the Vice-rector's Office of Research, highlights the leadership of the Catalan public universities, with the UB being the leading one, in quantity and quality of scientific performance, as well as in efficiency regarding funding. The report, presented in the Governing Council on November 6, analyses the performance and efficiency of research at the public universities of Catalonia over the last ten years.

The report, titled La producció científica a Catalunya i la contribució de les universitats públiques, notes that regarding the volume and impact of research in Spain, Catalonia generates more than the 28% of science publications, which accounts for about the 36% of the impact of the Spanish production in citations. Regarding the total scientific performance of Catalonia, the Catalan university system produces more than the 78% of the publications, 74% of the impact in citations and 70% of the higly cited publications.

Also, compared to the Spanish university system, the performance of the university system in Catalonia –largely represented by ACUP universities- accounts for the 27% of scientific publications, 35% in citation impact, and 43% of highly cited publications. Regarding the total scientific performance in Catalonia, the Catalan university system produces more than 78% of publications, 74% of impact in citations and 70% of highly cited publications. In this context, the University of Barcelona stands out as leading institution since it produces the 11% of the Spanish university scientific publications, generates the 16% of impact and 22% of highly cited publications.

Regarding some data on the excellence of research, Catalonia produces almost the 44% of the Spanish scientific publications regarded as of high impact internationally, and regarding the UB, the impact of scientific performance at the UB normalized by scientific categories is 55% superior to the international average. This excellence is also stated in the last publication of Highly Cited Researchers, the list of the most influential scientists worldwide –published by Clarivate Analytics, in which the UB is the Spanish university with most researchers among the most cited scientists worldwide.

Moreover, regarding the relation between performance and funding, the report defines an efficiency index that allows stating that Catalonia leads the ranking on productive efficiency in publications (1.56) and citations (2.01). When applying this index to the universities, the UB, with more than a million citations in ten years, obtains an index on publication efficiency between 2.34 and 1.34 points over the average, while in citations, it gets an index of 3.42. With these figures, the UB leads the efficiency of public university research in Spain.
