UNM judges needed for Central New Mexico STEM Research Challenge

Looking for something quick and easy to enhance a resume? The University of New Mexico’s STEM-H Center is seeking volunteer students and faculty judges for two upcoming competitions for the Central New Mexico STEM Research Challenge, and the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS).

The Central New Mexico STEM Research Challenge is in its 60th year as a regional science fair. Students advance to the regional competition from their school fairs and are competing to qualify for the state and international fairs as well as numerous top-of-category and special awards. Officials are expecting close to 500 middle and high school students from across Central New Mexico.

Judges will interview middle school and high school students about their science or engineering projects, score them and caucus with fellow judges to determine first, second and third places in a category.

The event will be held on Friday, March 27 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at EXPO New Mexico in the Manuel Lujan Building. Breakfast and coffee will be provided.

Anyone with research or work experience in engineering, mathematics, computer science, botany, environmental science, psychology, chemistry, physics, biology. Judges can register at Central New Mexico STEM Research Challenge.

The Southwest Regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium is designed to challenge and engage high school students in STEM. Individual students compete for scholarships and recognition by presenting the results of their original research efforts before a panel of judges and an audience of their peers.

There are two judging opportunities. The first will be on March 13 from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the University of New Mexico Student Union Building. The second will be on March 14 from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Judges can register at STEM-H Registration.
