Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of disability and death in Australia. Common causes are falls, car accidents and assault. These injuries can lead to complex, long-term problems affecting patients' personalities, relationships and independence.
The MRFF's Traumatic Brain Injury Mission is investing $50 million to improve patient recovery after brain injury. It supports projects that:
- better predict recovery outcomes after a traumatic brain injury
- identify the most effective care and treatments
- reduce barriers to support people to live their best life after a traumatic brain injury.
The Traumatic Brain Injury Mission Expert Advisory Panel has refreshed the Mission's Roadmap and Implementation Plan to outline its goals and priorities from March 2025.
In developing these documents, the Expert Advisory Panel considered stakeholder feedback from:
- a dedicated national consultation process
- initial consultations on the National Health and Medical Research Strategy.
The Roadmap and Implementation Plan place a greater emphasis on supporting traumatic brain injury care for:
- military personnel and veterans
- older people
- victim-survivors of family, domestic or sexual violence.
The Implementation Plan also outlines expected outcomes, funding allocations and grant durations for each priority area.
We thank the members of the Expert Advisory Panel for their participation.
