Upgraded James Street Public Amenities Now Open

Upgraded James Street public amenities are now open in Mount Gambier, providing a modern, accessible and welcoming facility for residents and visitors in the city centre. The renewal includes refurbished male and female facilities, upgraded accessible toilets and a new family room designed to better support families, carers and people of all abilities.

The James Street amenities renewal project included the complete refurbishment of the existing male and female toilet facilities, upgrades to two Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant accessible toilets and improvements within the Master Locksmiths Access Key (MLAK) accessible room to enhance functionality, comfort and the overall user experience.

A new family room has also been delivered, featuring a baby change table and both adult and child-sized toilets, providing a practical and inclusive space for families and caregivers.

City of Mount Gambier General Manager City Infrastructure Barbara Cernovskis said the renewal represents a significant improvement to one of the city's most frequently used public facilities.

"The James Street amenities serve a wide range of residents and visitors every day, making it essential that the facility is comfortable, accessible and welcoming for everyone," Ms Cernovskis said.

"The addition of the family room and upgrades to accessible facilities will provide a better experience for families, carers and people living with disability, while ensuring the amenities continue to meet community expectations well into the future."

The refurbishment focused on delivering a high quality, durable and contemporary finish throughout the facility. Upgrades include new wall tiling, energy efficient LED lighting and robust solid wall partition systems designed to improve privacy, longevity and vandal resistance.

Seamless epoxy flooring has also been installed throughout the amenities, providing a slip-resistant surface capable of withstanding high levels of public use while simplifying ongoing maintenance.

Home to the city's Changing Places facility, the James Street amenities precinct plays an important role in supporting people with high support needs and their carers through access to specialised equipment and additional space not available in standard accessible toilets. The renewal project also supports Council's Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) 2025 - 2029, strengthening accessibility and inclusion across the city.

"The refurbishment has created a brighter, safer and more welcoming environment, ensuring this important city centre facility remains a valuable community asset for years to come," Ms Cernovskis said.
