UPMC Magee Director Wins ASME Science Medal

PITTSBURGH - Pamela Moalli, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Urogynecology & Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery Division at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, has received the 2026 Edward Grood Interdisciplinary Team Science Medal in Bioengineering from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The honor recognizes her leadership as co-director of the interdisciplinary Translational Research Laboratories in Urogynecology (TRLU), which she oversees alongside the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering professor Steven Abramowitch, Ph.D.

TRLU research focuses on understanding and improving the diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor disorders. The researchers' work includes developing innovative surgical repair devices, studying how childbirth can cause pelvic injuries and advancing techniques to biofabricate vaginal tissue for women who experience significant vaginal tissue loss.

Moalli, the University of Pittsburgh professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive services, was awarded the prestigious Magee Prize for her work on developing new biomaterials to repair tissue loss in women with compromised vaginal structure and function. In addition to her research and clinical work, she serves as Interim Executive Director of the Magee-Womens Research Institute.
