Long-term dedication, local pride and community spirit - this week we're celebrating one of Omeo's most committed volunteers and the current East Gippsland Citizen of the Year.
Today we celebrate Tracey Ah Sam (pictured below, second from left), a long-standing contributor to the Omeo Recreation Reserve Committee of Management, where she has been the Secretary-Treasurer since 2007.
Tracey's volunteering journey began early, growing up in a small Western Australian farming town where sport and community were at the centre of life. From helping in canteens at basketball nights to supporting netball, tennis, football and social clubs, volunteering quickly became a way of life. After moving to Omeo in 1989, that community spirit continued - taking on roles across multiple clubs including canteen officer, coach, committee member, secretary, bar manager and life member of the Omeo Benambra Football Netball Club.
Over the years, Tracey has helped deliver countless local fundraising events and projects, from working bees and raffles to catering and the long-running annual rodeo BBQ, which has supported the community for more than 30 years. A highlight is seeing the impact of community projects firsthand - from major facility upgrades to small moments, like a young child excitedly noticing new doors at the recreation reserve.
Today, Tracey's volunteering is focused on administration and grant writing, helping secure funding and ensuring important projects continue for the Omeo community. The committee may be small, but their commitment is strong, proactive and deeply valued.
National Volunteer Week will be held from 18-24 May, and it's the perfect opportunity to recognise the volunteers who make a difference in your community through the East Gippsland Volunteer Honour Roll.
