- New subsidy to attract English language teachers for WA
- Subsidy will provide up to $3,150 towards course fees
- Available to prospective teachers enrolled in selected course intakes until December 2023
The Cook Government has launched the English Language Intensive Course of Overseas Students (ELICOS) Teachers' Subsidy to attract and assist prospective English teachers with course costs.
The subsidy will support the recent growth in the number of international students studying ELICOS, with enrolments nearly tripling since last year, up from 2,117 to 7,824.
The subsidy applies to eligible prospective teachers who are completing a Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA), a highly regarded qualification amongst WA employers seeking English language teachers.
The CELTA is the most widely recognised English teaching qualification in the world and is awarded by the University of Cambridge, English Language Assessment.
Up to 31 prospective teachers will be eligible to receive a support payment of up to $3,150 to assist with their course fees.
The subsidy is available to prospective teachers who enrol and complete the CELTA in WA at Milner International College of English and Phoenix Academy.

As stated by International Education Minister David Templeman:
"The ELICOS sub-sector has made a rapid recovery post COVID-19 and with the increased demand the Cook Government has launched this new subsidy to support the qualification of ELICOS teachers in WA.
"The CELTA qualification is an internationally recognised course and this new subsidy will help support prospective English language teachers in WA.
"The ELICOS sector is an important pathway for international students studying in WA and teaching English language to international students is a rewarding career. The value of international students within our community and classrooms is undeniable.
"I encourage prospective English language teachers to consider completing the CELTA in WA and take advantage of the WA Government's ELICOS Teachers' Subsidy. The CELTA qualification provides a great opportunity to teach the English language to international students in Western Australia."
