Waste 2 Art entries now open

Individuals, schools and community groups are invited to take up a challenge this year and create a new life for materials that would otherwise have been thrown away.

The annual Waste2 Art program is back at the Western Plains Cultural Centre for 2023 with entries now open for the Textile and Fast Fashion Theme.

Cultural Development Officer Jessica Moore said Waste 2 Art is the program that everyone looks forward too.

"Each year we are blown away by the community interest and the enthusiasm for taking some of our problematic waste and creating amazing artworks".

Each year the Waste 2 Art competition and exhibition showcases creative works made from reused and recyclable waste materials, with all local residents who reside in the Dubbo Local Government Area invited to take part.

"The aim of the program is to challenge perceptions about 'rubbish' and to celebrate the reuse and recycling of waste through arts and crafts.

"Textile & Fast Fashion includes discarded clothing or materials that generally becomes disposable after numerous uses or with the changing of fashion trends.

Fast Fashion is known to be cheap, trendy and disposable, with fashion production companies comprising 10 per cent of total global carbon emissions in the world. Over 100 billion garments are produced each year worldwide, resulting in over 92 million tonnes ending up in landfills," Ms Moore said.

Dubbo Regional Council supports the community education program Waste 2 Art provides, due to its innovative approach to waste education.

"Waste 2 Art is such a perfect example of how creative minds can take a problem and start to find a solution, not only are great artworks being created, but we all learn something that helps us change our waste management behaviour –Win Win" Ms Moore said.

With categories for Primary School, Secondary School, Community, Open (incl. professional artists), Creative Repair/ Restore or Refurbish, there is an opportunity for the whole community to become involved.

Entries close on 20 February.
