Wear Orange Wednesday recognises our State Emergency Service volunteers

State Emergency Services across Australia are being recognised for their dedicated service on Wear Orange Wednesday.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman said our ACT State Emergency Service volunteers go to great lengths to ensure the safety of the Canberra community.

"Each year, we recognise and say thanks to the ACT State Emergency Service on Wear Orange Wednesday for their ongoing dedication and commitment to assisting Canberrans during major weather events," Minister Gentleman said.

"Our SES volunteers have had an especially busy time over the past 18 months, demonstrating their versatility and commitment to helping Canberrans.

"Volunteers responded to storm and flood related incidents during the La Nina weather event and record-breaking hailstorms and assisted ACT Policing in search and rescues.

"They also worked alongside ACT Fire & Rescue and ACT Rural Fire Service during the 2019-20 Black Summer Fires and assisted ACT Health with COVID-19 compliance checks during Canberra's lockdown.

"Here's to all the volunteers across Australia who work all year round to protect us at our most vulnerable. We thank you for saving lives and protecting communities."

ACT Emergency Services Agency Commissioner Georgeina Whelan said WOW Day was about showing our appreciation to ACTSES and SES volunteers across Australia who generously give up their time to help communities during major weather emergencies.

"We not only thank our volunteers, but we also recognise and thank the workplaces who support our volunteers. Without their support the capability of our response teams would be reduced," Commissioner Whelan said.

"Thank you to all State Emergency Services across the country for your ongoing dedication and commitment to keeping the nation safe."
