Weather Alert: Northern Storms, Heatwaves Elsewhere

BOM
G'day from the Bureau with your National Weather Forecast around the country for Thursday, the 4th of December. And it's a pretty quiet one across much of the country thanks to two large high pressure systems, one in the Tasman and one out to the west of WA. That's going to bring dry, hot and sunny weather right across the country on Thursday. The only wet weather will just be a cold front bringing showers to southern and western parts of Tasmania, and also across our tropical north we could see showers and thunderstorms there across the Top End Gulf and through Cape York. But let's have a look at all of this in more detail.

Firstly, in Queensland we're going to see a repeat of what we've seen in the last few days with dry and sunny weather for much of the state. Just a few showers and thunderstorms across the northern parts there of Cape York and around the Gulf Coast. Hot inland though, you can see temperatures here getting up into the low 40s or high 30s there. A little bit cooler, though, through south-eastern parts of the state of Queensland, temperatures there sitting around the high 20s to 30 degrees with lots of sunshine. Brisbane looking at 29 degrees and lots of sunshine.

Moving down into New South Wales, we're going to see another dry, hot and sunny day on the way for much of New South Wales, thanks to this high pressure system out in the Tasman Sea. Now inland areas looking to say temperatures into the mid to high 30s there. The coastal areas also could see temperatures in the low 30s, as those westerly winds bring that heat down into eastern parts of the state. A warm and sunny day on the way in Sydney, 30 degrees. Slightly warmer and 31 degrees with lots of sunshine in Canberra.

Moving down into Victoria, again a hot and windy one on the way. We see temperatures in the low 30s through southern parts of the state, getting into the high 30s through northern areas, and we could even see Extreme Fire Dangers through north-western parts of the state through the combination of hot, dry and windy conditions. Temperatures there getting up into 38. But this trough line you see here, that marks the cool change likely to move into south-western parts of the state as we move in the late afternoon, and then across southern and northern parts as we get into Thursday night. Melbourne looking at a warm, dry and hot one, 33 degrees with gusty winds, with the cool change getting there into the evening, overnight hours.

Moving down into Tasmania, really eastern and northern parts will be dry, warm and windy, while it will be cooler in the southern parts of the state with showers there. Temperatures in the mid to high 20s through eastern and northern areas, cooler in the west, partly cloudy and windy. Could see some severe damaging winds through inland and eastern parts of the state as well, so watch out for those tomorrow. A windy and mild 27 degrees with a few clouds in Hobart.

Moving up into South Australia, again hot and windy one on the way. Extreme Fire Danger is likely through eastern and south-eastern parts of the state there. So watch out for that. Temperatures getting up into the low 40s or high 30s through northern parts of the state. Low to mid 30s through southern areas. And again, watch out for those Extreme Fire Dangers. Adelaide, a warm and sunny 33 degrees with partly cloudy skies.

Moving over into WA, we can see that heat really has eased now through south-western parts of the state compared to earlier this week, thanks to that trough shifting the heat into south-eastern parts of the country. So a much cooler day on the way through southern parts of WA, with temperatures in the mid to high 20s. Maybe just a chance of a coastal shower, mostly that will be offshore, mostly a sunny day for many. Perth looking at 25 degrees and sunshine. Although further north you can say temperatures staying hot through parts of the Pilbara, with temperatures in the high 30s to low 40s.

And finally moving up across our tropical north. Heat is also the story there for much of the state. We're looking at high 30s right across much of the NT, getting 40 in some areas as well. And that's similar as well through parts of the Kimberley too. Top End could see a few showers and thunderstorms up through northern areas and into the Carpentaria districts, but Darwin itself probably staying 34, partly cloudy conditions, maybe the chance of an inland or coastal storm later in the day. So with all the heat around and some fire dangers through southern parts of the country, make sure you get the latest forecasts and warnings for your area via the BOM website and the BOM weather app, and we'll see you here again tomorrow.
