What Youth Want campaign to help shape youth services

Students from Newport Lakes Primary School take part in the What Youth Want campaign

Hobsons Bay's youth have a chance to shape the opportunities available to them in the future as part of a unique campaign.

Hobsons Bay City Council has launched a seven-week What Youth Want engagement campaign to help guide the planning of programs and services for young people in the city.

All young people aged 10-25 who live, work, study, play or spend time in Hobsons Bay are encouraged to take part in the campaign, and help identify what's important to them and what could make Hobsons Bay a better place for them to live.

Young people can get involved by completing the short online survey and participating in a range of community workshops and events. Older adults can also have their say in a series of community workshops held across the city, including in Laverton, Altona and Newport.

The What Youth Want campaign was launched on International Youth Day last Friday, 12 August, and will run until the end of September. Information gathered from it will be shared with the community and the young people who took part.

To celebrate the launch, Council's Youth Services team and partner Youth Gurus ran workshops and events to 350 students from local primary and secondary schools on International Youth Day.

Mayor of Hobsons Bay, Cr Peter Hemphill, said the city's youth were an important and vibrant part of the community.

"There's no one better placed to tell us how Council can deliver better opportunities for young people than the young people themselves," Cr Hemphill said.

"This campaign is a great chance for us to get to know our youth better and for them to shape what's available to them throughout their community. There are a few simple things we want them to share with us: what's important to you, what do you want or need in your community, and how can we help you thrive to be the best you can be?

"This will be really valuable information, and the ideas, thoughts and concerns young people have about Hobsons Bay will help us make our city a better place to live.

"So I urge everyone aged 10-25 to have your say. Tell us your big ideas for the city, tell us what you'd like to see, what you'd like to be able to do, what you like and don't like about Hobsons Bay. This is a great chance to make our community a better place for you and for future generations."
