Where is reform in aged care

Doctors' Reform Society

Three weeks in to the election campaign and aged care is being ignored. The recent Royal Commission highlighted the problems and provided a raft of solutions.

DRS President, Dr Peter Davoren today asked " where are the policies that will properly reform aged care?".

Dr Davoren noted " nursing staff are leaving aged care in droves, GPs are following them out and the government has failed to adequately respond to the Commission's recommendations".

Aged care facilities need to be able to provide all care for their residents in most circumstances. Without GPs visiting and registered nurses to administer prescribed medicines and monitor responses residents have to be sent to hospitals for adequate care. Good medical care, pain relief and proper care of the dting should be integral parts of care in aged care facilities.

Dr Davoren asked all election candidates to " support proper wage reform in aged care, introduce mandated regulations on staffing and care and ensure adequate staffing at all levels to provide quality health care".
